History

Ege University Center for Research on Laboratory Animals (EGEHAYMER) was established in 2015 and officially licensed by the Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock since 25th of July, 2016. Researchers from inside and outside of Ege University can conduct research on laboratory animals after the approval by Ege University Local Ethics Committee of Animal Experiments.

Main policy of EGEHAYMER is to guarantee the breeding and use of laboratory animals in accordance with scientific methods, to standardize the conditions of animals with minimum distress during the experiments and to ensure that animal experiments are carried out only by the necessary educated researchers.

Ege University started to undertake renovation of conditions for animal studies with the enactment of the "Regulation on the Welfare and Protection of Animals Used for Experimental and Other Scientific Objectives" published by the Turkish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock on 13th of December, 2011. EGEHAYMER consists of a two-storey building with an area of 2400 squaremeters. For the production and maintenance of animals, it has suitable care rooms including 84 mice cages, 72 rat cages, 30 rabbits cages, 8 guinea pig cages and 24 hamster cages, as well as facilities for zebra fish, frogs and lizards. For the researchers, there are 3 operation rooms, post-operative care rooms, laboratories and research rooms. Temperature, pressure, humidity, ventilation and lighting are controlled by a special automation system inside the whole building.
